The kitchen!

August 14, 2012

This relationship, it’s full of give-and-take.

For example, I give directions and take photos.

Okay, that’s not exactly fair. While I was off at work during my long stretch last week, Tom worked hard toward making this place more livable. The disgusting old countertops were completely removed, and brand new shiny countertops went in in their place.

I had no idea they were so cheap, but new countertops were only a tiny bit more expensive than the sheet linoleum stuff, and buying the entire countertop meant we didn’t have to sand/level/prepare the existing surface to be covered.

Less work? I’m on board.

Option 1: this stuff, in a thin, 36″x96″ sheet, to be cut to size and put on the existing countertop (after much preparatory work)

Option 2: this stuff, which just needed to have the mitered edges connected at the angle in the corner, and required a cutout for the sink. Yes, please.

(Tom might not agree with the “less work” part, being that he did most of it, but I think he would.

I say most, because I actually helped! It went a little something like this:

1. Mix glue.
2. Apply glue to edges.
3. Drip glue on husband’s head.
4. Cuss and swear.
5. Attempt to tighten one bolt.
6. Give up.
7. Watch husband tighten bolts.
8. Complain that countertops aren’t matched up evenly. I guess I was supposed to be checking for that, or something, while he was tightening.
9. Observe as husband sighs, contemplates killing me, then adjusts countertops to be level.

See? Helpful.)

So anyway, with the cabinet doors removed, the cabinets painted, and the new countertops in place, it’s actually a somewhat usable space.

Oh hey, the faucet’s gone. No sense replacing it if you don’t have water to run through it…

Much better.

Wow! HUGE improvement! Great job, Tom… and Erin. (Isn’t the role of historian, documenting the process for posterity, more important than the actual installation?)
